About the Choir

The “Tslil” Jewish Choir (Hebr. sound) was founded in March 2003 by Agnieszka Najmałowska – a graduate of Musical Education Faculty of the Lodz Music Academy – who, after a stay in Israel, decided to foster a rebirth of rich Jewish musical heritage in Poland.

The “Tslil” Choir is the only amateur Jewish choir in Poland. By cultivating Jewish musical traditions, it connects listeners, as well as the singers, with Jewish customs and holidays. The repertoire of the choir includes songs in Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish (the language of the Ashkenazi Jews), and Ladino (the language of the Sephardic Jews). The aims of the choir’s activities are to spread tolerance and openness to racial, ethnic and religious differences, and to fight prejudices and stereotypes.

From October 2004 the choir has been working as an organization functioning simultaneously in two cities – Warsaw and Lodz, and consists of about forty people of different ages, who enjoy singing together. The Lodz group and the Warsaw group usually rehearse separately but they often perform together. Anyone who shares our basic aims, can join the choir regardless of one's nationality or religion. The principle of the choir is openness to people of different backgrounds and views.

The “Tslil” Choir performs on its own, but it participates in larger Jewish events and holiday celebrations, as well. It also takes part in Holocaust anniversary celebrations. During the first two years of its existence, the choir performed only in Poland, but since 2006 it has been including performances abroad as part of its plans.

Since its formation, the “Tslil” Choir has presented its repertoire in almost 100 concert and theatre performances. Generally, the choir gives performances for Jewish audiences (concerts for the Social-Cultural Society of the Jews and Ronald S. Lauder Foundation, occasional concerts organized by the Jewish Community during holiday and anniversary celebrations) but it also performs for wider audiences. The choir is involved in educational activities, organizing thematic concerts that introduce listeners to Jewish holiday customs and important events in the Jewish History (e.g. Purim and Hanukkah concerts, Holocaust songs in concerts for schools and culture centres). The choir has performed in a lot of Polish cities (Warsaw, Krakow, Katowice, Lodz) and participated in numerous festivals (The Singer Festival in Warsaw, “East-West — Coming together” in Radomsko, The Cantio Lodziensis festival in Lodz, The Bialowieza festival as well as the Jewish Culture Festival in Stuttgart).
